Our company is participating in national and European research projects aiming to the investigation of the seismic response and design of bridges.

 

SBRI+  -Valorization of knowledge for sustainable steel-composite bridges in built environment  (1/72016-31/62018)

Bridges are infrastructures of vital importance to society. Thus, the application of the Life Cycle Analysis methodology to this type of structures has deserved in recent years the attention of the various partners related to their design, construction and operation.
From the development of the Sustainable Steel-Composite Bridges in Built Environment (SBRI 2009-2012) research project, a holistic approach was implemented to three distinct typologies of composite steel and concrete bridges, combining the different evaluation analyses of life cycle: environmental (LCA); economic (LCC), and functional analysis (LCP) throughout its life cycle. Given the results of the SBRI, the SBRI + project aims to the valorization and extension of the methodology to advanced practical examples. In the SBRI + project, it is intended to disseminate the research developed to the various stakeholders: designers, contractors, authorities and concessionaires, related to the construction and operation of road bridges.

Within the framework of the SBRI+, several actions are implemented, from the preparation of manuals with the brief explanation on the application of the evaluation of the life cycle to bridges, the development of a relevant software (SBRI+ eTool) and the realization of workshops for the dissemination of the results of the project. The SBRI+ eTool is a software designed to easily evaluate the different impacts associated with the construction, operation and end of life of road bridges. The purpose of the SBRI+ eTool software is thus to provide practical information about a developing infrastructure project from its sustainability point of view, allowing users to make rational decisions about the possibilities and variations that design can have from the environ-mental, economic and social point of view.

The SBRI+ project was carried out within EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation HORIZON2020 and co-funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS)

 

SEQBRI - Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering Analysis of Short-Medium Span Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges  (1/7/2012-30/6/2015)

Short-medium span steel-concrete composite I-girder bridges made of hot rolled steel beams are very popular, owing to their short construction time and reduced costs. Moreover, they are very adequate for use in seismic prone areas due to their limited weight. With regard to static loading, these bridges can be designed based on the recent Codes; however, their behavior against seismic actions has not been yet investigated, and thus, they may exhibit damages even in low-seismicity zones.
SEQBRI aims at applying the PBEE methodology to such kind of bridges with S355M/N-S460M/N fine grain steels, and to provide the foundation for a new generation of European seismic codes, extending EN1998-1 and EN1998-2.

ASPROGE - Seismic protection of bridges (1/10/2003-31/3/2007)

Scope of the research program "Asproge" is the seismic protection of bridges and particularly:

1) Enhancement of the bridge design against earthquake actions and their seismic behavior.

2) Assessment of the actual seismic behavior and the vulnerability of existing bridges..

Most of the investigated bridges are located at the road axis of Egnatia Odos in northern Greece, consist in 680 km of motorway, including 30 major bridges and more than 500 ordinary ones.

The project was funded by the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology.
